Reflections on Day 4 of the Brisbane to Byron Walk

December 23rd

I was picked up at my friend Kate’s home by a an older taxi driver, to be taken to Beenleigh Train Station, to catch a train to Ormeau Train Station where I finished the day before. It’s a good feeling to share with people about the walk I’m doing and the reason for it. It inspires people.

The countryside is pretty, with lots of trees and rolling green hillsides and paddocks.

The walk from Ormeau Station to Coomera shops was along service roads, parallel with the freeway. Big trucks hurtled past and I felt quite unsafe. I was using Google Maps to direct my route and it was giving me wrong directions, sending me into people’s long driveways and over roads that just didn’t exist.

As I cross the Coomera River, I take my shoes off and sink my feet into the cool water. Not content with just my feet being cooled, I wet my head also.

By the time I got to Oxenford shops, and walked around in circles trying to find the bus stop (I was getting tired by this time), coupled with the uncertainty of the route, I panicked a bit, which caused me stress and ended up straining a muscle in my thigh.

Westfield Helensvale is my final destination for the day, and I expect I’ll walk to there later in the day. I jump on a bus and head to Helensvale shops to get a massage so I can keep walking. A dear friend Christiane meets me for lunch and gives me a thoughtful present of bath salts and spritzer she’s made herself to help me on my journey. Thank you Christiane xxx.

I met Clinton at the Orient Massage Place. He was waiting to receive his massage. He congratulated me on my walk so far. My masseuse, May Zhao, comes from China and is a fully registered nurse there. She’d like to study Nursing in Australia, and I encouraged her to do it. Her massage was awesome!!

It’s too late to continue walking today. My goal is to get to the ocean tomorrow, for Christmas Eve. Fingers and legs crossed. Ouch!! Crossing my legs hurts….oooohhhh…..

My friend Shirlene picks me up at Helensvale shops. I shower, get dressed to go out to a friends birthday party at a great Irish pub on the water at Jacobs Well, Harrigans. I have a fantastic night with old and new friends. I crave sleep though.
